Impact

From improving the material conditions of millions of people to affecting key policy decisions at local, regional and national levels, ACORN uses people-powered collective action to win.

Examples of some of our achievements includes:

  • Forcing TSB to drop a rule in their buy-to-let mortgage policy that caused insecurity for renters after only 3 days of campaigning. This followed two previous campaigns that led to other high street banks dropping discriminatory policies.

  • Securing over £100 million in fire safety measures for social housing tower blocks across Bristol, and £18 million in repairs as a result of resident-led campaigns

  • Keeping £100s millions in the pockets of low income families after TWICE saving a council tax benefit in Bristol, and saving a £7.2 million holiday time free school meal scheme in Norfolk

  • Stopping the use of bailiffs to collect council tax debt in Manchester, getting buses back into public control in regions across the country, and public toilets reopened in a number of cities

  • Getting landlord licensing schemes to drive up standards for renters introduced, resisting dozens of evictions, getting repairs done and deposits returned for hundreds of renters

But these victories are more than just pounds and pence. They have empowered the marginalised, built community strength and solidarity, and laid the foundations for ordinary people to take power back.

Testimonies

  • "I came away from this training with an understanding of the complexity and science of community organising and resources and skills needed for it to be effective - particularly how important developing local leaders and community power are.”

    Susan, People’s Health Trust

  • “I came away from this with a greater understanding of how to organise a campaign in a way that makes it accessible to women - how to spur and support women to take on roles within an organisation/campaign”

    Emma, Rosa-Luxembourg Stiftung
